Retrofit Snow Melting

Retroft Driveway HeatThis snowmelt retrofit in concrete was installed by Warmquest using Heatizon Systems Tuff Cable products for a residence that needed to utilize convenient wheel chair access. The home-owner utilizes a wheelchair, and needs to be able to get from the garage and into the rear entrance of the home every day of the year regardless of weather conditions. The existing sloped concrete sidewalk extending from the garage to the rear entrance of the home was difficult for the resident to negotiate with a wheelchair in wet or snow covered conditions. Since the concrete sidewalk was already in place and in excellent condition, Warmquest suggested a retrofit application for this project eliminating an expensive and redundant tearout process.

Low Voltage Radiant HeatingUsing ASHRAE’s “Snow Melting and Freeze Protection” guidelines, Warmquest designed 22 watts per square foot for this project by providing six (6) runs of Heatizon Tuff Cable on 6″ centers on the sidewalk, and eight (8) runs of Heatizon Tuff Cable on 6″ centers at the driveway. The design was chalked and then sawcut in the existing concrete; Warmquest then retrofitted Heatizon Tuff Cable heating element into 1/4″ wide sawcuts. The cuts were then sealed with caulking.

The retrofit snow melt system includes a Heatizon CBX7 Control Unit, a 6kVA transformer, and is manually activated by an M325D 12 hour timer.
